What a treat we have had: hosting a travel group of 40 from Germany. The Castle Church (site of a famous 95 Theses posting, circa 1517) has a Gospel Choir that enjoys learning and singing Gospel and other music, mostly in English. Their repertoire includes traditional spirituals, music from South Africa and contemporary music written in a Gospel style. It is wonderful to hear these singers, most of whom lived for some time under the communist rule that controlled the eastern part of Germany from the end of the WW II until 1989. Many of their songs are songs of freedom that reflect a deep yearning for political, social and spiritual freedom. One can listen to songs like, “Free at Last”, “Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel”, and “Freedom is coming” and hear the many dimensions of this yearning.
