In Germany, we were 12˚ north of Philadelphia — this translated into almost two more hours of darkness in the winter.
Well, the old adage says we can curse the darkness or we can light a candle. Many will be lighting candles as the new season comes upon us. But, before lighting that candle, I would encourage folks to go outside and look up into the dark sky. Take advantage of the darker dark of the coming season (especially when there is a new moon – Nov. 25 is the next one), and look up at the stars. As I walked to the gym last week (about 5:20 am), I noticed how incredible the star-filled sky was!
So, don’t curse the darkness, hold on to the candles, let the cooler nights that provide clearer skies give you a chance to marvel at the vastness of God’s universe and appreciate just how much was accomplished on Day 4 of creation (“Let there be lights in the dome”).
P.S. If you like to see your ‘dome lights’ move, there is the Leonid Meteor Shower on the evening of Nov. 17-18. Courtesy of Rob Webb, Pequea Valley High School
