The Easter season runs for a total of seven Sundays, through May 17 this year. The preceding Thursday, May 14, 40 days after Easter, marks Ascension Day. Some churches, and sometimes a group of churches (such as the Indian Valley Cluster of which Advent is a part), hold Ascension Day worship services on Thursday; some others, like Advent this year, commemorate the Ascension on the following Sunday, the seventh and last Sunday of Easter. Then follows the third major festival of the church year, Pentecost (May 24), the gift of the Holy Spirit. The first Sunday after Pentecost (May 31) is Trinity Sunday, when the doctrine of God in Three Persons (Father / Parent, Son / Child, and Spirit) is examined. The second and remaining Sundays after Pentecost, lasting until Christ the King Sunday in November (except for a few festival Sundays), are referred to as "Ordinary Time," not "ordinary" as in "nothing special" but rather "orderly time" during which the life and teachings of Jesus Christ are addressed in roughly the order in which they appear in Scripture.
